Presented
is a French WW II
dive knife
purchased
from Belgium from the estate of an Antwerp collector. The brass has a patina on both the
hilt and on the
sheath that varies in shades from olive and light green to dark green with some
black. The brass is all in excellent condition showing
only a few dents and handling marks. The blade has a very sharp edge with considerable encrustation
of
what may be hardened rust over most of its surface. Where it is uncovered
by this coating, the color of the blade
is grey
The knife has a small 1/16 inch crack on
the inside rim, but screws into the sheath securely. The blade is slightly loose
in the grip and when turned the tang can be seen to move at
the end of the pommel. This is a good sign since there are copies of dive
knives being made in Germany where the tang is only a short stub and is subject
to breaking. Like with many of this design, there is no drain hole at
the bottom of the scabbard.
Unfortunately, there is little documented
information
as to when these French knives were made and
who manufactured them.
