This is one of the nicest and unique antique miniature signal
cannons we have seen. The workmanship is excellent. This cannon has a foundry made
tube mounted on a hand crafted wood
6 Pound Field Carriage as used in the Revolutionary War.
Presented
is an iron barreled signal cannon mounted on a wood carriage with hand carved wood spoked wheels having iron
bands. The design follows that of the Revolutionary War
Period. The 6-pound field gun was a lightweight, mobile
piece that was a favored by both the Americans and the British of the field artillery.
The barrel is foundry fashioned and has an unusual narrowing
or choke just behind the muzzle. This is a very unusual feature and possibly indicates the full sized cannon was of an experimental
design. The trunnions extend from the center of the barrel and the bore extends to the touch hole. The hand crafted
carriage is fitted with brass straps and brass embellishments as was on the real field guns. The trunnion caps are of a heavier
gauge brass. There are eyelets with chain attached of which some is missing.
The
picture below shows the reduced size of the bore at the coke point. The left carriage axel is not bent it is distorted by
the close in angle of the camera.

The machinery and wood work are well joined
so that the entire assembly fits together with precision. There is no means to adjust the elevation.
MARKINGS & PROVENANCE: There
are no markings. The cannon was acquired in the normal course of business from an old time collector of miniature cannons
and Civil War related items.

CONDITION: The touch
hole is open to the bore. The wood carriage is in excellent condition and its fittings are accurate to the
period. The rims around the wheels, and hubs are bent along their edges and there is paint loss, more so around
the edges of the rims. There are minor marks of age as expected. There are no other mold marks or inscriptions.
Some of the chain link is missing. There is no method to adjust elevation. The brass was polished some time ago and has regained
some of its patina.
This exceptionally fine example is being sold for
display purposes only. No attempt should be made to fire it without inspection by a gunsmith.
