Presented is an
authentic builder's model which was used to celebrate the launching
of a vessel namer
CRUIZER on October 5th 1861.
This type half model were given to the owner or kept by the builder to
be used for advertising or as a historic record of their
builds.
True builders models like
this are very scarce and its rich, mellow patina of
age makes a beautiful wall hanging in any
room .
The
half model's hull is made of 7 lifts (one plank each) of
Mahogany. The model deck is varnished and there is a pilothouse and other fittings
on it. The cap rail of the bulwark and rubbing
strake are possibly ebony or are painted black. The cutwatrer, keel and rudder
are possibly finished in the same fashion as is the trim
around the paddle wheel cage.
The
design is typical for side wheel steamers of this period. There
is a straight forefoot and round hollowed
bow transitioning into round bilges, rectangular center section where the
paddle wheel is positioned. This tapers into a streamlined keel with a
round counter above.. The 40 1/2 inch hull is mounted
on a backboard 46" long, which is varnished. The
name CRUIZER
is painted in faded
red above the upper horizontal beam of
the cage. Painted in gold on the viewer's
left at the bottom
of the backboard is LAUNCHED 5th DAY OF OCTOBER
1861.

CONDITION: All the wood is In overall excellent condition, but
there are some small parts that have fallen off over the years. The hull
and backboard are varnished which has acquired a pleasant golden patina.
The trim on the model is either ebony or painted black, or maybe a
combination of both. The finish is in overall excellent condition. On
deck there is evidence that a smoke stack was fitted forward of the aft
deck house and aft of the pilothouse. There is no indication that the paddle machinery was fitted under
the cage. There are cleats on the back and
the front of the cage that served as a ladder and one of the aft
steps is missing. There are four holes drilled in the backboard
for mounting. Metal hardware has been added for that
purpose. The name CRUIZER is painted in
what is now faded red over the horizontal cross bar of the cage. For a
150 year old model it is in remarkably fine
condition.

HISTORY OF SHIP: We have been unable to identify the a side wheel
steamer that was namer CRUIZER that was launched on October 5,
1861. This is likely because the ship was registered in a country such as Bermuda or Grenada whose records have not as yet
been digitized. However, we have come up with a ship that closely matches the
design of this half hull and its particulars.
This ship was
Launched at the yard of Harlan and Hollingsworth Company at Wilmington,
Delaware on 15 October 1860 for account of the Charles Morgans Southern
Steamship Company as the William G. Hewes. She had displacement of 1,477
tons or new register tonnage of 1,230 tons. Her dimensions were 2394x
33x 10 or 72,95 x 10 x 3,0 meters. Her crew numbered 68 men. The
vertical beam steam engine and one boiler supplied 500 hp. After her
commissioning she went into service between New York City and New Orleans on 11 January
1861.
As William G. Hewes
she was seized by the Governor of Louisiana on 28 April 1961 and
put into service as a Confederate blockade runner
until 5 April a year later. When in Naval service her armament consisted of 4-20 pound
breech loaders and 8-12 pound smooth bores. When Admiral
David Farragut captured New Orleans,
Louisiana, in April 1862, Hewes shifted her operations from there to
Charleston, South Carolina, and Wilmington, North Carolina. She was then
renamed Ella and Annie. Operating under the Importing & Exporting Co. of
South Carolina, she renewed blockade running to Bermuda in April 1863
un
til being captured by the Northern
forces off New Inlet, North Carolina, on 8 November 1863
. The Union navy bought her and placed her provisionally in service on 10
December as the USS Malvern and on 9 February of the next year
she was commissioned under that name. On 24 October, she was auctioned at New
York to S.G. Bogart who sold her back
to her original owner Charles Morgans, Southern Steamship Company, and who
restored her original name, William G. Hewes. Thereafter, she was used as
a freighter/passenger ship. In 1878 she was transferred to the Louisiana
& Texas RR also property of Morgan to be used as a West
Indies fruit trader until she was lost during a gale in 20 February 1895 on
Colorado Reef off the Cuban Coast.
PROVENANCE: Bought in
New England at auction.
