MARINE FOLK ART EARLY ELTO / EVINRUDE 1923 SOLID RUDDER TWIN OUTBOARD MOTOR FOR DISPLAY
STAND INCLUDED. SHIPPING ADDITIONAL!
One Only Available!
Year: 1923 Name: ELTO Model:
Solid Rudder Twin Serial Number: A 6682 H.P. 2.75 Length 37“ x 14” W x 21 1/2” wide Weight: 55 pounds
Presented is the first of Ole Evinrude's light twin outboard
motor designs with a rudder. It was was introduced in 1921 and this is a 1923 model made in 1922. Few of these were made so
consider this design rare. It s is the design that got Evinrude back in outboard manufacturing and assured the rebirth of
his brand name. The motor offered is a restored ELTO Light Twin Rowboat
Motor with a solid rudder that is strictly for display. Those who appreciate the restoration
as a form of industrial Folk Art will find this a great conversation piece. The motor was thoroughly cleaned, stripped, painted,
and re-chromed where required with new decals,
and then reassembled for display use. It is a nostalgic
example of Americana as an expression of manufacturing Folk Art.
The
supply of old engines for this purpose is limited, and the restoration labor intensive and complex so don't expect to see
many of these available. The finished product is very limited. For
example, we have only one example of the Elto solid rudder outboard motor in collectible condition available.

The design is by Ole Evinrude in 1921, and it is the
motor that was the rebirth of his second outboard career. It is referred to as the "silvery" Elto Solid Rudder twin. The motor
is stationary and the boat is turned by using a rudder much like an inboard vessel. Cooling is by a water pump. Ignition is
via battery and an Atwater-Kent timer under the flywheel. Fuel is supplied by a poppet style mixing valve, not really a true
carburetor. A very novel design for its time and the motor that renewed the sales and profitability of the Evinrude companies.
It is intended for "Display Only". Not Running!

Evinrude is one of the most enduring names in outboard motors and celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2008. The patriarch
of the name, Ole, and his wife and partner Bess, were in and out of the business a number of times before Bess succumbed to
ill health in 1933 and passed on. Ole, unable to recover from his loss, died 14 months later at age 57. His son Ralph, took
over the reins and became the new president of OMC. Many advances were made during Ralph's stewardship and after WW II, the
company enjoyed the boom in boating that followed. After 50 years at the helm, Ralph Evinrude retired as chairman of OMC.
Ralph died in Stuart, FL in 1986 and leaves his second wife, the actress Frances Langford, to follow in the boating tradition
with a large yacht and marina. The company breaks the billion dollar mark in sales after his death. But after this milestone,
the impact of increased government pollution regulations increased costs while sales were declining. This ended with the company
filing for bankruptcy in 2000. Seeing an opportunity, Bombardier of Canada acquired the Evinrude assets and the company was
reborn in 2001, and is operating successfully today.
