ANTIQUE BRONZE DESKTOP FOUNDRY MODEL U.S. NAVY SUBMARINE DECK CANNON WW I / WW II
A finely machined miniature cannon model resembling
the deck guns
fitted to WW I and early WW II U.S. Navy Submarines
Presented is what we believe is
a foundry model of a naval, pedestal mount, deck gun as was fitted to U.S. submarines of the WW I era. The design closely
resembles those of the 3" 50 caliber type which were used in WW I and the early stages of WW II. The model gun is designed
to turn, (track) and the barrel may be raised and lowered (elevate), but the breech doesn't open. The open aiming sights are
those typically used against aircraft and secondarily against surface targets.
Machined from solid billets of bronze, with
no machine marks showing indicates a great deal of time was spent in finishing the metal work, indicating that the workmanship
is of the highest quality.
The entire gun and pedestal
mount have a dark olive Green patina which shows a great depth of color, making this a magnificent work of military art. The
gun as mounted on the WW I submarine R-1 shown below.

The 3 inch 50 caliber dual purpose cannon deck gun was standard issue on board many United States
Navy Submarines as seen above on R-1 in 1918 during the early stages of World War II. It was generally considered to be a
defensive weapon designed for use against aircraft. Mounted on a submarine, it was primarily employed defensively against
enemy surface ships. Mounted on a pedestal either forward or aft of the conning tower, this weapon could fire a 13 lb high
explosive projectile with a muzzle velocity of 2,700 feet per second, and a maximum range of just over 16,000 yards with a
ceiling of 21,500 feet. This gun could elevate to 85° and depress to 10°. Cartridges were packed four to a box, the weight
of a full box being about 125 lbs with cartridges weighing approximately 32lbs each. The 3 inch 50 had a watertight tampion
for the muzzle, and a watertight cover for the breech with stainless steel mechanisms and bore. This weapon could be used
with equally deadly effect against both surface and aerial targets.
SUITABLE ONLY FOR DISPLAY
We estimate its age as at least 74 years old.
CONDITION: The cannon is in near
perfect condition only showing a few marks of its age, on the lower base which has some dings. These are barely noticeable,
and overall it is in fine, high quality condition. The rich dark olive green patina is beautiful. The breech is a single block
of bronze which is machined at the front to accept the barrel. It does not open at the rear. There are no mold marks or inscriptions.
