FAMOUS
NATIONAL MARINE LAMP CO, NEW YORK
COMBINATION
RUNNING LIGHT

Presented is an early style kerosene
burner combination navigation light with Fresnel lenses made by the National Marine Lamp Co. of New York. This
lamp was made prior to 1912 since after that date National Maritime were marked with a patent date of 1912 or used the trade
name “Triplex”. This is an early example since the company was founded in 1906.
This lamp is most suitable for someone seeking this shielded design of which
only a few have survived. It has a great deal of character because it shows evidence of repair from when it was bent
mostly on the left side, and has some minor marks of age, and imperfections, all of which add to its
uniqueness.
THE MAKER: National
Marine Lamp Co., according to Anthony Hobson's Lanterns that Lit our World, Book 2 was started
in 1906 operating from Pear St. in New York City. It brought the burner shop Bristol Brass in Forestville, CT in
1911. National Marine bought from Bristol Brass, so similarities in the products are to be expected. Later
National Marine absorbed a company called American Lamp and Brass, according to Hobson, but the "American"
name died with the acquisition. Fredrick Perkins became president of National in 1913. Frederick and his son Louis left
that company in 1916 and moved back to Brooklyn, New York where they started Perkins Marine Lamp Corporation
so there is a lot of lamp history in this early lamp.

CONDITION: The light on its left side shows evidence
of being dropped and the repaired. There are some wrinkles, dents and scrapes, and some separation at the joints, but
it served faithfully thereafter for many years. The burner is present, but the wick adjustment is frozen. The port
lens has one small chip. We have taken this into account in its price which would have substantially higher.
MARKING: Stamped with the maker's name and address on the back door.
