CONDITION: As you might expect due to its age, there is a small loss of paint,
and lots of crackle on the black hull. One lifeboat is missing. The bridge wings on both sides show evidence of damage. However,
it all adds up to making this a more interesting display. It would benefit from a careful dusting by the new owner.
The
artist's craftsmanship and attention to detail is exceptional on this outstanding work, and reminds us of the models
of Charles K. Van Ryper, Vineyard Haven, MA (1891-1964).
We have
seen comparable Van Ryper models sell for $600 and more
at auction.
SIGNED: There is hand lettered on the bottom the ship's particulars plus Jap.
Utility, Patent No. 367260 and the initials M.S.
C-3 CLASS MERCHANT SHIP: Type C3 ships were the third type of cargo ship designed by the United States
Maritime Commission (MARCOM) in the late 1930's. As it had done with the Type C1 ships and Type C2 ships, MARCOM circulated
preliminary plans for comment. The design presented was not specific to any service or trade route, but was a general purpose
ship that could be modified for specific uses. The C3 was larger and faster than the C1 and C2 contemporaries,
measuring 492 feet from stem to stern (vs. 459 for the C2), and designed to make 16.5 knots (vs. 15.5 for the C2). Like the
C2, it had five cargo holds. A total of 465 of these ships were built between 1939 and 1947. During World War II, many C3 ships were converted to naval uses, particularly as Bogue class escort carriers
and as destroyer tenders, submarine tenders and seaplane tenders.
