ANTIQUE LION HEAD MILITARY NAVAL DIRK
GUARANTEED
AUTHENTIC
Presented is a double edged "dirk" with heavily encrusted
spear point blade and dominating lion's head brass pommel. It
has a well formed lion's head and brass hardware with an unusual rectangular block behind the crossguard and before the ferule.
A black plastic tape inventory label with "A 104" is on the rectangular block. The grip is wood, but seems to be covered in
a very thin covering which may be only a heavy layer of black paint. There is a repair on the reverse. It has a balanced
fighting feel in hand which favors the blade end.
 Pommels with animal heads, primarily lions were particularly popular with military officers here in America
during the French & Indian and Revolutionary Wars says George C. Neumann in "Swords & Blades of the American Revolution".
The lion's head emblem
appears to be a single casting instead of the more typical vertical half shells. There are numerous examples of lion's head
pommel swords in Neumann's "Swords & Blades of the American Revolution" with the majority of them of English
origin and dates from 1760-1780. The lion's head was also used by both the French, English and the American's during
this period. This example is sharply formed with distinct features.
CONDITION: The tang goes though the head and there is a brass nail though the mouth to keep it from turning. The
spear point blade has a sharp double edge, and is heavily rusted and pitted. Colors range from brown to black. Everything
is tight. There is no scabbard.
