SMALL AMERICAN  DAGGER OR DIRK

Possibly Naval Origin

Unusual small size well made dirk and scabbard

Presented is a highly unusual small scale dagger or dirk that dates from the time of the American Revolution. It likely is European in origin and made for this market at the time of our Revolutionary War. There is a large eagle with shield on its chest starting at the midpoint of the blade. The eagle has two arrows in its right talon. There are thirteen six pointed stars above all engraved on the obverse.  On the reverse is the usual design of foliage. The straight blade is double edged from the guard to the tip. Everything is tight.

 

PROVENCE: Colonel Robert Rankin on page 63 (with pictures) in his "Small Arms of the Sea Services" describes a strikingly similar example as, "American Naval Dirk: Turned ivory grips with the short cross guard of gilt brass with delicate relief.... The 4 3/4 inch blade, which is blued and gold wash was finished over the engraved designs, also bears a large American shield. The dirks pictured of this size are all witout carrying rings.

The brass scabbard is engraved with a swirl of leafs surrounding a frog stud on the obverse. The back is plain. There are no carrying rings. The hilt, including the pommel, is a turned piece of bone or ivory which has developed a pleasing yellow to brown patina. The brass cross guard and ferule are firmly in place.

CONDITION: There is a small dent, front and back, at the throat of the scabbard. This may have been done to hold the blade tighter. There is no evidence of bluing or gilding remaining. There are no makers marks. It is in overall excellent condition baring these notations.
