BRIEF HISTORY: Nathan Starr of Middletown, Connecticut
began his sword business in 1798 by making cavalry sabers for enlisted men. He produced 2,000 swords marking them with "N.
Starr & Co." on one side of the blade and "US - 1799" on the other. He and his son Nathan, Jr., made swords,
sabers and cutlasses for the United States until 1818 and were the leading maker until 1830 until 1830 when the Ames
Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Mass started business. The three accounted for most of the swords produced in this
country for many years. Ames continues in business today in a much reduced fashion.
This is a fine example of an early N. Starr
