Oil on canvas 20th Century                                        Signed Jerome Howes LR Unframed 23 1/2" L x 11 1/2"                                   Framed 28 3/4" x 16 3/4"   We Believe Jerome Howes to be One of the Great Marine Artists of the 20th Century   Presented is a contemporary oil painting in the classic marine style of the 19th Century. It is of four ships returning to Liverpool, England that were damaged in a series of gales that struck in January, 1866. First in line after Pilot Boat "8" is RMS Athenium. Next is the Barque Richard Cobden, then the Barque Lord Dufferin, and finally the Coaster Persia. The pilot boat in the foreground is a gaff headed schooner under shortened canvas. All the ships are heeling to leeward and shows the wind is still blowing. The sky is bluish grey with many dark clouds. A truly breath taking work done in the style of the 1800's. On the lower right, it is signed Jerome Howes. A old style wood and gilded frame is included. The condition of the painting is excellent and should be considered a recent work done in the style of the period by a maritime artist of growing renown. Back of painting on board Label on back Signed in red, Jerome Howes, lower right BIOGRAPHY:   Jerome Howes was born May 25, 1955, a thirteenth generation Cape Codder. His father was a paintings and antiques dealer in Brewster who specialized in marine paintings and artifacts and had an extensive private collection of 19th century ship portraits, both sail and steam. Howes grew up with a deep appreciation of the American painting tradition, and especially the marine tradition. Largely self-taught, in 1994 Howes devoted himself to painting and quickly gained a name and a following on his native Cape Cod, and Nantucket and the Vineyard. Howes currently divides his time between the rural landscape of Vermont, where he lives with his wife and three daughters, and Cape Cod.   SHIP PORTRAITS AND SEASCAPES were a favorite subject of master painters of many nationalities and provide a lasting remembrance of a romantic and beautiful period when sailing ships ruled the oceans.
