FAMOUS
NATIONAL MARINE LAMP CO, NEW YORK
RUNNING
LIGHTS
Presented are a matched set of early style kerosene
burner navigation lights with Fresnel lenses that are were made by the National Marine Lamp Co. of New York. The set
of three recently came on the market after being handed down in that same family which accounts for their excellent condition.
They were originally purchased at an estate sale on the Manasquan River, NJ, about 35 to 40 yrs ago.
The three lamps are bottom opening, Starboard, Port and Masthead navigation lights.
These have had their kerosene oil lamps in place. The design likely dates back to the early 1900's.
The lights are most suitable for those who appreciate the cache, and character of nautical
equipment that has been designed for use at sea, and consequently shows some minor marks of age, and imperfections,
all of which add to their charm.
THE MAKER: National Marine Lamp
Co., according to Anthony Hobson's Lanterns that Lit our World, Book 2 was started
in 1906, and bought the burner shop Bristol Brass' in Forestville, CT in 1911. National Marine bought from
Bristol Brass, so similarities in the products are to be expected. Later National Marine absorbed
a company called American Lamp and Brass, according to Hobson, but the "American" name died with the acquisition. Fredrick
Perkins became president of National in 1913. Frederick and his son Louis left that company in 1916 and moved back to
Brooklyn, New York where they started Perkins Marine Lamp Corporation so there is a lot of lamp history in
this set.

CONDITION: The set is in outstanding condition. Yes,
there are some minor dents and scrapes, and some of the chimney's show hairline fractures, but there is nothing of consequence
that distracts from their "gem like" beauty. All the lens' are without any chips or cracks. There are no wicks in the
burners.
MARKINGS: Only the masthead light has a maker's tag. However, it is
obvious from the design, workmanship, and weight of the lamps that they come from the same source. All of the burners
have the "VORTEX" mark.
