EARLY ENGLISH COMBINATION CANDLE LIT
RUNNING LIGHT
Presented is an early British combination candle
lit lamp that was used on a small craft before more efficient fuel became available. It was manufactured by Eli
Griffiths & Sons, 102 Bradford St., Birmingham, England before the mandatory use of whale oil and later kerosene came
in to general use. This was around 1850 which helps date this lamp as being earlier. As a side note, even though the Fresnel
lens was invented in 1822, it did not see much use until after the 1850's in lighthouses and marine navigation lamps. Eli
Griffiths was granted a British patent in 1894 for a mast light on ocean-going ships.
The light is most suitable for those
who appreciate the cache, and character of highly unusual nautical equipment that has been used at sea, and
consequently shows appropriate marks of age, and minor imperfections, all of which add to their charm.
CONDITION: This light is made from iron with a copper trim.
It's paint has been renewed in the recent past. The lenses are in excellent condition and the lamp is complete
with candle holder. This is an old lamp and the two clamps that hold the top on do not always stay in position
and it sometimes may fall off.
