Presented is an absolutely magnificent original painting by an unknown artist of
George Washington in his American Army general's uniform standing with his war horse. It comes in a heavily carved
gilded wood frame. The aged look is enhanced by heavy crackleure and it is handsomely framed in a period style gilded
wood.
 Washington started his military career as a British officer and in 1755 at the youthful age of 23 was appointed colonel
in charge of the Virginia Militia. He left the army in 1758 and returned to Mount Vernon, directing his attention toward restoring
his neglected estate. After 1769, Washington became a leader in Virginia's opposition to Great Britain's colonial policies.
As a delegate to the First and Second Continental Congress,1774-75, his presence was said
to be a stabilizing influence. In June 1775 he was Congress's unanimous choice as Commander in Chief of the Continental
forces.
This painting likely shows Washington as he may have looked between that time
and 1778 - 1780 when he over came adversities and was leading the American Armies to final victory. A famous painting by John
Trumbull known to have been painted in 1780 shows a similar regalia, as does the uniform he wears in the painting Scottsman John
Faed done after his death. Note: if the picture of Faed's is not reversed, he has the coat buttoned on the wrong side.

CONDITION: In excellent condition with heavy brush strokes and excellent detailing.
There is crackling which does not show up well in the photographs. The painting is done by an artist trained in
the style of the period who is a master of his craft, and should be considered of recent vintage.
