Presented is a handsome oil painting of a distinguished,
but unknown naval officer, a rear admiral. Painted by Walter L. Clark, this was a deaccession from India House, One Hanover
Square, New York City. He is shown in his formal full dress choker uniform with medals and regulation sword. The
identity of this high ranking officer can be determined from the medals he is authorized to wear. A worthy challange for a
researcher of military ancestors.

India House, One Hanover Square, NYC | | India House was started by New York City merchants in 1914 who were engaged in foreign
trade. They chose the name India House which in their minds symbolized ocean commerce. The name also honors
the Dutch West India Company, the first colonizers of Manhattan.
Over the years the club has amassed an extensive collection
of paintings, prints, maritime relics and other decorations which gives it a unique atmosphere. These and other
gifts from members and friends have make up a very fine collection of pictures, models and other articles connected
with sailing vessels and seafaring life of which this painting was one.
Unfortunately, with the passing of time the
name of the person in the portrait has been lost. What we know from the painting is that he was an important looking
individual in the prime of life. His medals tell us he was a recipient of the Navy Distinguished Service Medal which was
originally awarded starting in 1919 then second only to the Medal of Honor. It wars bestowed upon members of the Navy
or Marine Corps who distinguish themselves by exceptionally meritorious service in a duty of great responsibility. The next
medal to his right is the World War One Victory Medal, then a medal with clasps that denotes seven campaigns or sea service
tours, and finally two medals which may have something to do with the Philippine Campaign which lasted until 1913. A person
with the time to do the research might be able to identify the subject. A good starting point is the out-of-print book "Distinguished
Service" by Harry R. Stringer, Fassett Publishing Company, 1921 which
lists the recipients of the Navy DSM by name.

THE ARTIST: The painting is signed on the lower left, Walter
L. Clark, but undated. Clark is said to have lived 1859-1935.

CONDITION: The paint
is somewhat brittle and should be handled with care. There are some small nail holes along the bottom edge which may
indicate it was mounted on another stretcher. There are some other small punctures and marks, which do not
show from about a foot. The painting has been lightly retouched, restretched and the frame is new.
