CHELSEA PRE WW II MARITIME COMMISSION RADIO
ROOM CLOCK
Presented is an outstanding example of a Chelsea
ship's radio room clock. It complies with the International Maritime Organization's color and silent period regulations
adopted after the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 which were not modified until after WW II. The case and movement have
matching numbers, 293012 dating it Ca 1940-1944. Etched above the number is 50/723/64. It is keeping near perfect time,
in step with a quartz wrist watch. Recently shined and lacquered for your enjoyment.

For those seeking more information, here is a link to the history of
radio room clocks which came as an aftermath to the RMS Titanic sinking in 1912.
The clock is in
a forged bronze case with three mounting holes. Its flange has a slght bend in two spots from when it was removed
from a bulkhead. They do not show from the front. The Chelsea Clock Company, Boston is etched above the center arbor
with U.S. Maritime Commission, and the Serial Number 10178 beneath.
The face has acid etched black Arabic numerals using the 12 hour and 24 hour
system on a silver background. There are 3 minute red colored silent intervals alternating at 0300 and
0900 on the quarter hours. The case is in excellent new" condition and the dial is in "good original"
condition with only a few minor blemishes that are not noticeable from a foot away. The hands are unique to this type
clock with the addition of a second hour hand which keeps time at a second zone, most typically Greenwich. The sweep second
hand has a classic arrow head terminus.
The clock mechanism is a time only 8 day movement with an 11-jeweled escapement.
It is keeping perfect time.
