THOMAS WALKER CHERUB III LOG
In Superb Condition
One of Walker's Rarest and Largest Logs
Presented is
a Walker Cherub Log in its original case, complete with all fittings. It was developed in 1879, 13 years after the Harpoon
log, by Thomas Ferdinand Walker for larger size ships. It is immense in size compared to other logs, and
is arguably the most useful and long serving log offered.
It was made by Thomas Walker & Son, Ltd
of Birmingham, England whose name is synonymous with patent logs. It features a self contained instrument head with
a distance measuring calculator which was mounted on the vessel's taffrail. The instrument section has a white porcelain face,
and three analog counters with black Arabic numbers for distance run. A very large spinner or fish is trailed in
the water behind the ship and its rotation is transmitted to the counter by means of a line (not included). There is no reason
to think it is not in working condition. As far as we can determine this model is Walker's largest log.
CONDITION: The instrument head and
spinners, their lead line and weights are in remarkably good condition considering their years if serovce at sea. The
brass deck shoe, in which the instrument head mounts, is present as is the original can of oil. Missing is the trailing line.
The wood case has some minor chips on the top, but is in sturdy condition.
Cherub logs are one of the oldest
and largest of all of Thomas Walker's distance measuring apparatus and are infrequently seen at auction or on the market.
Consequently they are very hard to find and should be a part of any serious collection.
