CA 1850 BY FELIX MARLIN, SWANSEA
PRESENTED
is a beautiful late 19th Century sextant engraved Felix Marlin, Swansea. This name could have been the maker or the sextant could have been made specifically for this gentleman. We were not able to identify Felix Marlin in “Sextants at Greenwich”. publication.
The quality of the machining and beautifully crafted bronze frame indicate this instrument was made by an accomplished instrument maker, one who would stand well in his trade. It has been polished and lacquered to emphasize its beauty and importance as a fine example of navigation history.
CONDITION:
The instrument is in excellent condition. The graduated arc, and all its hardware are present. All three bronze legs are original. All shades are in perfect condition with one sighting tube present, and one missing. The index mirror is in very good condition for its age with minor discoloration. The sextant has a beautiful rose wood handle. The brass on the fine wood case has been polished and the case appears to be original to the instrument.
MARKINGS:
The arc is inscribed Felix Marlin, Swansea, and reads 0 to 120 each ten degrees. The vernier reads from the right from 0 to 10 minutes in two minute increments.
DATING THE INSTRUMENT:
The instrument dates late 19th Century, early 20th Century. It’s hard to be more specific without identifying the maker.
