FOLK ART SHIP’S
BAS RELIEF PLAQUE
OF
YACHT “UTOWANA”

Bas reliefHalf Hull of Utowana on painted background
Signed M. Blanchard
Framed 35" x 23 1/4" x 3"

Presented is a beautifully executed Bas Relief half hull model of Yacht “Utowana”. The painting is done on oak wood planks, with the yacht under reduced sail, and populated by a number of people. This is classic American seafaring Folk Art.. The artist’s signature on the bottom right is M. Blanchard. We have not been able to locate any information on the artist, and consequently, have not been able to assign a date to this piece. There is hand lettering on the top section of the painting that reads as follows: “Built in 1883 by Jno.Roach & Son on Chester, Pa. UTOWANA Owner . W.E. Connor Rear Commodore of the Boston Yacht Club.
We have been able to verify that Jno. Roach & Sons was a ship builder in Pa. during that time period, and the W. E. Connor was a Rear Commodore of the Boston Yacht Club. We’ve also been able to locate the picture below on the Yacht “Utowana”, after she was recommissioned as a trawler by the US Navy in 1917.
Utowana (American Trawler, ex-Yacht, 1891) in port, probably shortly after she was converted from a yacht to a trawler in 1917.
USS Utowana (SP-951) – also known as USS Victorine (SP-951) -- was a fishing trawler acquired by the U.S. Navy during World War I. The Navy had planned to use her as a minesweeper based out of Kittery, Maine; however, Utowana spent most of her service time operating as an armed patrol craft, responsible for escorting Allied ships across the dangerous North Atlantic Ocean, she served through the war and the armistice before returning to the United States for decommissioning in Nov. of 1919.

We think that this is one of the most interesting 3 dimensional pieces of seafaring art, as it encompasses both half hull and diorama aspects. It will make a dramatic addition to any decor.
