One of the rarest and largest Walker Logs.
Presented
is an excellent example of a Walker Harpoon log with a Patent date of Sept 18th 1866 marking it as one
of the limited number made in America. The English logs are all marked with a date of 1861, and A1, London. They are the earliest
of recording logs. It was made by Thomas Walker & Son, Ltd of Birmingham, England whose name is synonymous with patent
logs. It features a self contained unit with the distance measuring calculator as an integral part of the spinner. The instrument
section has a white porcelain face, and three analog counters with black Arabic numbers for distance run. The
aft section of the log with the fins turns as the device is pulled through the water turning a series of gears which records
the distance run. There is no reason to think it is not in working condition. This is one of Walker's earliest, and being
American made, rarest of their larger logs.
Harpoon logs are one of the oldest and rarest of all of Thomas Walker's distance
measuring apparatus and are infrequently seen at auction or on the market. Consequently, this American made log is very
hard to find and should be a part of any serious collection.
