Presented is a ship portrait of a Civil War Era steam and sail propelled American Sloop of War. The Italian born artist is Salvatore Colaciccio who specializes in ship portraits and marine scenes. He has resided in England for the last 30 years.  The ship portrayed is a screw and sail warship shown steaming off the coast of an unknown land mass with her canvas furled, smoke from her stacks. She has an American flag streaming from the mizzen gaff. At the mizzen truck is the Union Jack which was being used to signal for a pilot.  There are other vessels sailing in the background.

The design of this class of warship dates  back to the birth of the American Navy in 1775 and required the vessel had at 20 guns or less arranged on a single deck, and were smaller than frigates. Later fitted with steam engines to supplement their sails, Sloops of War were used extensively during the Civil War. 

One such Sloop of War during the Civil War was the USS KEARSARGE which was  201' overall. Her draft was 14' and she had a beam of 34'. Her registered tonnage was 1,150 long tons.  Kearsarge was powered by steam and sail and was armed with seven cannon.

THE PAINTING: The artist, uses bright vibrant colors to capture the feeling of a rugged and husky Man of War.  His knowledge of these ships is shown with the attention to the details of the size of the figures, rigging and in the furl of the sails.  There are thirteen gun ports on each side.

CONDITION: The frame is British and has a veneer of burled wood. The upper right corner when viewing the painting has a one inch by one half inch chip missing. The condition of the painting is excellent and shows a great deal of  attention to detail of the ship and the seascape. It was purchased at auction in New England in 2014.

BIOGRAPHY:  Salvatore Colacicco is a widely acclaimed marine artist who was born in 1935 in Bellagio, near Lake Como, and studied at Brera Academy, Milan. He has been living in England for over thirty years. His works adorn the walls of many collections, board rooms and offices throughout Europe, England and the United States. Salvatore Colacicco's style of painting very much reminds one of marine artists throughout the 19th century with an obvious Italian feel. Among Colacicco's achievements were 26 panels illustrating the history and development of the paddle steamer for the Russell Cotes Museum.
