British Admiralty Pattern Single Draw Marine Telescope - Spy Glass Ca 1875
This Fine Spy Glass Has Been Sold. Thank you!British Admiralty Pattern Single Draw
Marine Telescope - Spy Glass Ca 1875

Late 19th century telescopes in are increasingly difficult to find
in good original condition. This is one of the Admiralty designs which makes it special.
Presented is a
very large, high quality, British Admiralty pattern, single draw telescope designed specifically for marine use. It is in
remarkable condition for its age and use at sea. The scope is unmarked, but is made to the highest standards for the period
so it may be considered of "Presentation Quality".. It is in full working order with no exceptions. The center barrel
is made of Mahogany, 12 3/4" long, which is covered in the center in Brown painted Duck canvas with a
few small pieces of the coating flaked off. The canvas is finished by a three strand Turk's head at the
front and a four strand Turk's head at the rear. In front is 5 1/8" polished brass. The rear tube is 1" with
a closed extension of 1 3/4" to be added. The lenses are uncoated, and crystal clear. The telescope was likely made in
the last quarter of the 19th Century. The canvas Duck covering and the ornamental rope-work is pictured below.
DIMENSIONS: It measures
20 3/4" closed and 30” extended. The objective lens is 40mm diameter. The exit pupil
diameter is 12.75 mm. Weighs a heavy 3 lbs. The picture below shows the front dust cover open. The the rear
dust cover doesn't show.
CONDITION: Admiralty
pattern, single draw telescope of brass or copper. The barrel's center section is covered in brown painted
duck as described the paragraph 1. All the brass is free of larger dents which is remarkable. There are only a few small ones.
The large 40 mm objective lens and the ocular lens are uncoated. Both dust covers are present and in perfect condition. The
focus is sharp and clear. There is a sliding sun shield to reduce glare at sea. Both lenses are free of fungus.
Overall, it
is a fine example of a genuine antique marine telescope. It will be a good investment.
