EARLY BRITISH PILLOW POMMEL IRON NAVAL DIRK
Ca 1765 GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC
Presented is a straightforward early British dirk with pillow pommel, and reverse quillions, but the hilt hardware
is Iron rather than the normal brass. We dates this example prior to 1770 when this form of pommel was first introduced
in brass. The blade has a double edge and single fuller on both sides, and a nicely formed reeded ivory grip.
CONDITION: The pommel is slightly loose, but everything else is tight. On
each ricasso there is illegible engraving. Blade is grey with small darker patches and tiny pin pricking. No scabbard.
A silver metal inventory disk with "A 48" is wired to the tang nut.

An example of this dirk is shown on page 242, identified as "32.K" in George C.
Neumann's book, "Swords & Blades of the American Revolution".
Neumann
says, "During the American Revolution most British midshipmen appear to have carried hangers. Yet during the late 1770's,
thin bladed daggers began to be worn by some midshipmen and officers. This example, typifies the inexpensive early style.
i.e. a long straight double edged blade with center fuller; opposite curving ; a rectangular cross section wooden grip; plus
a flat pommel and rounded capstan. Length overall 19 1/2", Blade 15 1/4" x 7/8".
