In Joel's land based careers in 1968, after a ten year stint with Volkswagen where he was COO of the six
state mid-west distributorship, he became CEO of a listed conglomerate. It grew to have operations in celestial navigation,
real estate development, heavy construction, retailing, and an investment in an airline, among others. Julie headed up
a small chain or retail stores, and also a direct mail operation.
Married in 1971, their mutual interests were in flying, boating, and collecting
fine arts and antiques with either a nautical slant or in the realm of Chinese porcelains.
The nature of Joel's business involvements allowed them to travel
worldwide. They appreciated visiting countries in Europe and Asia, and always came home with new and exciting things
to treasure. They continue this today and offer treasures for you to share. The picture at left was taken in August, 2008.
This small grouping is how Joel looked in various stages of his maritime career.
The picture on the left was taken in 1949, the one beside it, around 1980, and the last one at the U.S. Naval Academy, Ca
1997.
From Joel's youth, he always had a deep seated interest in ships and the sea. After naval training at Admiral
Farragut Academy, Class of 1949, he spent five years on active duty in the U.S. Navy, and then attended Tulane University,
(BBA 1956) and Northwestern University Graduate School of Business Administration. In 1976, he became a licensed U.S.
Merchant Marine officer.
Over the years Joel has written on technical topics in the field of navigation and seamanship
and his works have appeared in magazines such as Sail, Cruising World and Yachting. In hard cover, he was an editor of “Bowditch“
The American Practical Navigator, 1977 Edition, NAVPUB-9; The Best of Sail Cruising, 1976, 1977; and Selecting a Marine Sextant,
Cornell Maritime Press, 1975.
With Julie's encouragement, he decided to make a career change, and follow his
dreams. Julie and Joel moved to the Eastern Caribbean in late 1978. There he headed up a small inter-island charter-cruise
company. They had a glorious time for six years, but both started to yearn to get back to a more culturally rewarding life
style and returned to the States in 1984.
On their return, Joel did investment management for about ten years, and
Julie worked in management with William-Sonoma opening their Bal Harbour, Florida store in 1986. Their focus
shifted once again in 1995. Joel became a squadron commander for the Association of Naval Aviation, and also served as
a varsity offshore sailing team coach at the U.S. Naval Academy. It was a great time commuting back and forth between Annapolis,
MD, and various ports in Florida in their boat. When age dictated that Joel could no longer travel long distances
by boat in 2001, he looked for other ways to keep busy. After some buying and selling in a minor way on eBay, they
decided to launch their business with the objective of using all their past experience and training to
provide unique and different products, at fair prices, and backing them with the finest service imaginable,.
Hence, Land and Sea Collection became the
source for fine navigation instruments, nautical antiques, marine art and elegant boat and airplane models. It reflects their
knowledge and expertise. They strive to offer fine and interesting products ranging from the expensive to the moderately
priced in the categories of nautical antiques, marine art to contemporarily made boat and ship models of classic
designs. Examples run the gamut from very expensive to those items that can be afforded and enjoyed by everyone.
