Presented is a classic, original oil painting of
an unidentified full rigged clipper ship under full sails. She is sailing close to the wind, gracefully cutting
through medium seas with a "bone in her teeth". There is another sailing vessel in the background. A U.S. ensign fly's
from her mizzen.
The sky is a brilliant blue with many fair weather clouds. A truly majestic
ship done in the ship portrait style of the 1850's. On the lower left, it is signed H. Parker, an unlisted artist. A heavy custom
wood and gilded frame is included. The condition of the painting is excellent and shows a great deal of detail and
realistic figures of the crew.

SHIP PORTRAITS
were done by master painters of many nationalities and provide a lasting remembrance of a romantic and beautiful period of
ocean commerce. Some of the better known American painters who recorded this period of our history were James
and Thomas Butterworth, Antonio Jacobsen, Fitz Henry Lane, John Stobart and William Stubbs to mention only a few.
This painting was done by an unlisted artist in the style of classic ship portraits of the period. He shows
great talent in capturing this art form and understanding clipper ships and their sails and rigging.
CHINA TRADE PAINTINGS: There were numerous artists who painted
portraits of Western vessels throughout the Orient and some migrated to Europe to practice their craft. Most did not sign
their works. Their paintings were somewhat flat in their style, and more simply executed than European and American artists.
Frequently the ships and landscapes in the backgrounds gave an indication of where they were painted. The paintings may
have age crackles in their varnish, and many of them are in poor condition requiring restoration. They were usually presented
with a carved wooden frame, in the so called Chinese Chippendale.
