SCHRADER TYPE "E" COMMERCIAL
DIVING HELMET Ca 1951!

TOTAL WEIGHT 43 lbs  BONNET 18.5 lbs  BREAST PLATE 20 lbs

STAND NOT INCLUDED

Presented is a helmet was one of the last made by made by A. Schrader & Son, Inc of Brooklyn,
NY shortly before their assets were sold to Craftsweld Manufacturing Company, also of New York

in 1952. It was Schrader's practice not to number their bonnets, but the breast plate's tag carries
number 1477, and was likely made in 1951.  In 1999 Craftsweld, a maker of underwater diving

torches and other accessories, made only the commercial version of the Scrhrader design from

1952 until 1999 when the helmet assets were again sold, this time to Atlantic Diving Equipment,

Co. The seller kept the use of the Schrader name. The picture below is that of a tinned Craftsweld

helmet made after the purchase.

The patina on this helmet is in shades of dark green on both the bonnet and breast plate. In
addition the bonnet's top has some deep reds . It is in outstanding condition with all moving parts functioning except for the front door. The front door is supposed to screw in and out, but needs
to be freed-up.The communication fitting on the back is marked Craftsweld. The helmet comes
from the family of a professional diver where it was for the last 50 years.

CONDITION: In excellent shape for a helmet that has served in commercial service and is over 50 years old. The speaker and ear piece are present. The front door does not unscrew. The air passages are all intact. The chin button is in place and functions properly. The bonnet shows only a few small dents and only a few small dimples. They add to its character. A number of items have been removed from front of the bonnet such as lashing eyes, and hooks. There is a round plate adjacent to the front port from which something has been removed. These appear to have been professionally done by a factory and are not field modifications. The hole in lock in back has been soldered closed, and the lower right hand screw on the front guard has been tapped to extract, but never removed. The nuts used are from a MK V, and not the wing type nuts shown in the picture of the tinned Craftsweld. There is nothing else of consequence.
Like all used diving gear, this is being sold for DISPLAY ONLY. It should not be dived without having passed inspection by a certified dive ship.

                             All vents intact
                  Deep red patina on top

BRIEF HISTORY OF A. SCHRADER'S & SON: August Schrader arrived in New York in August of 1840 from Hamburg, Germany where he was a mechanic. By 1844, he had opened a shop at 115 John St in Manhattan making parts for taking daguerreotype photographs. Shortly thereafter, Christian Baecher joined the company. Baecher was a metal worker in brass.

In 1846, Schrader took an interest in an underwater race in lower Manhattan off "The Battery". After inspecting the divers equipment he decided that he could make improvements and better helmets. By 1849, Schrader had made two helmets which he sold to the Union India Rubber Co. of New York for $12.00 each. More orders were to follow. He produced an improved air pump in 1856, and now was well underway in the diving equipment business.

During the onslaught of World War Two only Morse and Schrader were making dive helmets for the Navy. DESCO and Miller-Dunn came into the picture as the War progressed.

In 1952, the company was sold to Craftsweld Manufacturing Corp. In 1999 Craftsweld sold the assets of Schrader to Atlantic Diving Equipment,Co., but kept the use of the Schrader name.
