Presented is an original oil painting on canvas of  a side-wheel steamer painted by an unknown artist. It is in the style of  Alexander Stuart, a Scotsman who became an American citizen, and is similar to the work of Antonio Jacobsen who followed Stuart and became the most prolific of all ship portrait painters of his time. Also in contention during the same period is James Bard, a prolific painter of Hudson River and Long Island Sound shipping. As far as we can determine, there was no ship by the name of Ames W. Baldwin, but this just adds to the unknown of this painting.

The aged look is enhanced by heavy crackleure and is handsomely framed in a heavy wood held together by square pegs. The painting is done by an artist trained in the style of the period who is a master of his craft. Consequently, It should be considered of recent vintage. The artist captures the drama of a steamship with all flags flying as she runs along a wooded coast line. A truly great painting of in the  style of the ship portrait artists of the1880's by an accomplished, but unknown follower.

Alexander C. Stuart (1831 - 1898) Scot

The Scottish-born Alexander Charles Stuart was an accomplished ship portrait and marine painter who worked primarily in navy yards and shipyards along the Delaware River, as well as in Washington, Philadelphia and New York. Born around 1831, Stuart grew up in Glasgow, then a major shipbuilding capital, and acquired early drafting skills as an apprentice to a machinist. Stuart emigrated to Chester, Pennsylvania in 1861, and served in the Marines, then joined the Union Navy in 1863, when he began to create ship paintings and watercolors. After resigning from the Navy in 1866, he was naturalized as a U.S. citizen, and worked primarily as an artist and illustrator for the merchant shipbuilding firms of John Roach & Son and Harlan & Hollingsworth, in Wilmington, Delaware.

Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen (1850-1921) American

Antonio Jacobsen, is America's most famous ship portrait artist who is recognized for his unsurpassed paintings of America's maritime history. He recorded domestic and international ships as they passed through the age of sail to steam. He was a prolific painter and is believed to have painted some 6000 paintings of which about 3000 survived..

Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on November 2, 1850, where his family had been violin makers. His father encouraged him to practice a similar craft and at an early age he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Design in Copenhagen. Reversed family fortunes forced him to withdraw and at the age of 18, when it was compulsory for him to join the Danish military he decided instead to sail for America.

Like many other immigrants in the 1870's, he went to New York City's Battery Park looking for work. He passed his days sketching the ships that sailed in and out of the harbor. It wasn’t long before a representative from Marvin Safe Company noticed his drawings and offered him a job decorating safes. His ability as an artist was further recognized as he began to receive commissions from sea captains and ship owners, and eventually Steamship companies, to record their entire fleet. The Old Dominion Line, The Fall River Line and The White Star Line are some of the steamship companies that commissioned him to paint portraits of all the ship in their respective fleets.

In addition, the Clyde Line, the Black Ball Line, the Mallory Line, the Anchor Line and Red Star Line also sought his services. The notoriety that Jacobsen received from all these commissions helped establish him as the foremost chronicler of American shipping in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

James Bard (1815-1897) American

The twin brothers, John and James Bard were self-taught ship portraitists who created accurate paintings of the steamships and sailing craft which operated around New York, Long Island Sound and the Hudson River areas. Because the vessels depicted were drawn to exact scale after intensive personal observation and measurements, paintings by James Bard and his brother are considered extremely important to the history of navigation.

By 1839, the brothers had gone their separate ways. James Bard continued to paint at a tremendous rate, completing more than 430 known paintings during his lifetime, and quite reasonably, hundreds more. His most enduring legacy is the important record he created of almost every steamship that operated on the Hudson River during the last half of the Nineteenth Century.

Bard's stylistic seas and skies are skillfully combined with draftsman-like quality in the careful rendering of his vessels. Movement is shown with a spray of water made up of a profusion of small white dots. His works are all exuberant and filled with a sense of Americana that capture with simplistic beauty the flavor of an age that will not be seen again.
