GIANT RED & GREEN LENSES SIDE LIGHTS
Very Rare!
ONE PAIR ONLY
PRESENTED is
what we believe to be the largest marine navigation sidelights that Perkins Marine Hardware of Brooklyn, NY ever made. They
are not recorded in Anthony Hobson's, "Lanterns That Lit Our World", Gold Hill Press, 2004, even though a chapter is devoted
to the Perkins Company from its inception.
The
largest side lights in overall mass next to these were made from 1916 to 1929 and measured 13 3/4" wide with a height
of 13 1/2". Their lens size was 10" W x 7 1/2" H. They were for Class 3 vessels and are considered very rare. These lights
are 19" high not counting the 5" bail (handle), and 10" deep. The area of the lenses in both lights are about the same.
These light were electrified years ago by using their original kerosene reservoirs. If desired, they could be returned to
oil burning without too much trouble.
The
tag on both lights dates the lamp from Ca 1931 and reads:
PERKO

MANUFACTURERS
PERKINS
MARINE LAMP & HDWR CORP
BROOKLYN,
N.Y., U.S.A.
Starting
in 1904, Perko made all kinds of lights under their
original name, "Persky". In 1916, they incorporated under the name Perkins Marine Lamp Corporation in Brooklyn,
NY. In 1931 the name was changed to Perkins Marine Lamp & Hardware Corporation. In 1961, the Brooklyn facilities
were closed and operations were moved to Miami, FL. Perkins was dropped from the name and the company became known as PERKO
Inc. It was in 1916 that the Perko trademark was registered, and it has been used ever since. The company still makes
high quality marine lights and hardware out of its Miami, FL facilities.
For those that like polished copper, you have to love these lights since nothing
else will compare to their grandeur.
