OPEN FRAME HALF HULL OF EARLY BRITISH SAIL COLLIER, Ca 1752

 Presented is a handsome builder's half hull model with partially exposed frames that was used to record
the shape of a British sailing collier of the type that was used by Captain James Cook in his first 1769 circumnavigation.
Cook's vessel was originally built as a merchant collier named Earl of Pembroke. She was 106 feet long,
29 feet wide, 29 feet 3 inches in the beam and weighed 368 tons. Earl of Pembroke was especially fitted for
the circumnavigation, and was renamed HMS Endeavour Bark. They returned safely home from the first voyage in
1771 and two more expeditions were to follow.
Whitby colliers such as Endeavour, were bluff-bowed and were chosen for their strength,
shallow draught, and storage capacity. Although the ship was to change, the type did not. The Resolution of the second
and third Cook voyages was of the same build, and even came from the same Whitby shipyard as the Endeavour.
There is, what is said to be the earliest surviving half hull in England at the Liverpool Museum
of another Whitby collier, the Liberty & Property which is built in the same manner as this example. She was
scaled off the model to be 92 ft on deck, with a beam of 25 feet and of 380 tons displacement.
PROVENANCE: Nothing is known as the origin of this model other than she is typical
of British made presentation half hulls, and was offered at auction by an estate.

The backboard is 33" L x 11 3/4" W x 1" D

CONSTRUCTION & CONDITION: The half hull and its paint is in excellent
overall good condition. The hull features a stern castle, cathead and figurehead is painted black with a white whale
stripe and black painted gun ports from the shearline to the waterline. She is then a red lead color below the waterline
including the keel. The black paint on the backboard which has a narrow split has crackled with age. There is what
appears to be a flower at each corner. Of the six chain plates for the foremast, five remain. Of the chain plates
for the mainmast only one remains. Otherwise she is as`originally made except that the attachment screws on the back
shows the hull has been refastened to the backboard.
