Naval Officer's retirement gift.   OUTSTANDING USN GREY PATINA BRONZE BELL Ca 1910 WITH WOOD BRACKET   Presented is a very fine U.S. Navy bell which, based on all the USN bells we have inspected, is estimated to be Ca 1910. This is based on its etched 1 1/8 inch letters and "rings" at th the top and bottom that were discontinued in the late 1920's. The patina is a highly unusual silver grey . It has a very heavy thick wall construction with concentric rings at it top and at the bottom near the flare of its mouth. The nut has the cast in place shoulder which serves as a washer and marks it as original. There are no foundry marks which is typical of most Navy bells. It comes as shown with a custom hard wood bracket.   This is a solid bronze bell and has a shape similar to the bell that served of three ship's of the U.S. Navy named USS Guam. The first USS Guam served as a Yangtze River Gunboat protecting American interests starting in 1928.     When rung, the bell sets up a stirring resonance which is indicative of only the finest bell metal being used.                       Authentic Clapper                              Back of Bell CONDITION: The bell is in an outstanding state of original preservation and has NO imperfections what-so-ever which adds to it good looks. It comes from a private collection where it was maintained inside for the last fifteen years. Even so, it has a deep, silver grey, gunmetal patina which we have never seen before and can't explain, since the surface does not have the appearance of being nickel plated. The coloration is obviously the result of years of sea service.
