STEAM COLLIER "STELLING", 1876
WILLIAM CORY & SONS, LONDON, OPERATOR

Presented is a beautiful cased builder's model of the early steam collier "STELLING" built in 1876 for John F. Fenwick of England. She was built by the famous Palmer Brothers Yard on the River Tyne. This was the same yard that later built the far advanced iron warship HMS Warrior in 1890. The design was of a single engined carrier with two masts carrying sails. Since steam engines were new to ships and coaling ports were far apart, some of the passage was done under sail. Ships of this design were used to carry coal and other bulk cargo such as ore and were called colliers. They are built wide and strong, with a flat bottom, and a shallow draft. The shallow draft allows the ship to pull very close to shore and alongside docks for loading and discharge. Colliers provide a very large amount of cargo space for their size.

It is reported that Fenwick leased the STELLING to William Cory & Son of London under a demise charter agreement. The Cory firm was an affiliation of eight London companies that were doing business as coal merchants, lightermen, and owners and leasors of colliers. They were one of the first to bring coal to London by steamer. Cory had started business in 1872 and over the many years grew into a much larger business. They became tug operators, taking over several other companies and eventually consolidating under the control of Cory Towage Ltd. Around 1985, the flag emblem was altered from a white diamond to a blue one edged white. After over 128 years, they were absorbed on 20 February 2000 by Bureau Wijsmuller B.V.

Highly detailed models such as this are becoming extremely scarce and are hard to find.

CONSTRUCTION: The model is constructed of various materials which include wood for the masts, deck, deck houses, ladders, and machinery. And, thread for the rigging, and metal for the railings. The two steering wheels are built up from metal, piece by piece, which required great skill. The flags are made from paper, and colored with paint. The port holes and hatches are hand inked in India ink as was the practice in the mid 1800's and later. Painted with a black hull, classic pink bottom, and varnished woodwork, the model is a magnificent example of the model maker's art.

CONDITION: Everything is in remarkable original condition except that the rudder has been repaired and there is a piece missing from the point of the bottom of the rudder to the keel, and one blade of the propellor is missing. Most people would not notice it. The glazed case's trim has some water spotting.
