VERY RARE ROYAL NAVY ADMIRAL'S RUDDER - TILLER HEAD Ca 1810
Presented is a very rare antique British made pulling
boat's steering device called a "rudder or tiller head" that most likely was used on an admiral's barge. The rudder head mounted
on the top of the rudder's rudder post. It allowed the boat's helmsman, then called coxswain, to sit all the way aft while
looking forward. He steered the boat by pulling on the tiller lines, and there are two blocks for this purpose. It was a space
saving device since steering by a tiller required that the coxswain sit further forward and move the tiller from side to side
to make a turn. This required that there was a clear area on both sides behind him.
Rudder heads are very rare and few are seen outside museums. The picture is of a model in
the Rodger's Ship Collection at the United States Naval Academy Museum in Annapolis, and shows the type of boat to which
it would be fitted at the rudder head.

Nautical Department is Jon Baddely. While he held a similar position at Sotheby, he wrote a book titled "NAUTICAL
ANTIQUES & COLLECTABLES" which was published by them in 1993. See page 75 which pictures three
rudder heads, one of which is is very similar to the one offered.
Jacqueline L. Kranz in her book, "American Nautical Art & Antiques",
by Crown Publishers in 1975 again shows something similar on page 107. This set is mistakenly identified as nautical handles
converted into bookends (?). The picture is courtesy of Ronald Bourgeaulat, owner and chief of Northeast Auction Gallery,

CONDITION: This relic of times past, is in exceptional original
condition and is mounted on a plaque which may be Walnut. It is all complete with two blocks for tackle and in working condition.
All you need is a boat with rudder to fit it to, or use it as a display.
