EXTREME CLIPPER SHIP
 “CAIRNGORM”
SAILOR MADE HALF HULL SHIP MODEL, 1853

Presented is a large model of the extreme clipper ship CAIRNGORM built by Alexander Hall & Sons in Aberdeen, Scotland and launched in January, 1853. Large original models such as this are much admired, highly sought after, and in very limited supply.

The half hull is constructed of four lifts of wood, above the waterline which is painted black, and 6 lifts below the waterline which is varnished. The ships name and builder are painted in the middle of the Mahogany mounting board. The workmanship indicates that it was likely made in the ship's early career by a yard worker or a crew member or someone intimately familiar with her lines.

DIMENSIONS:

The ship model is 54 3/16" L x 7" H x 3 1/2" W
The backboard is 59" L x 9 3/4" H x 5 1/2" W
Weight 14 pounds.

CONDITION: The model is in overall excellent condition, and may have been repainted at some time. It hull apears to be hollow. The topsides of the hull is not completely fair, which indicates that it may not have been completely finished before it was originally painted. This is in contrast to the model's bottom which was faired before being varnished.

From the Aberdeen Journal, January, 1853

"LAUNCH OF A MAGNIFICENT CLIPPER.—Last week there was launched, from the building yard of Messrs A. Hall and Sons, a splendid clipper ship, named the Cairngorm The vessel, owning to the extreme sharpness of her bottom, was launched on a cradle yesterday week, when there was not sufficient water to float her off; it was then deemed necessary to remove the cradle, and on Saturday the launch was accomplished, to the entire satisfaction of all concerned, and she was floated into the Victoria Dock to receive her equipments.

The dimensions of the Cairngorm are — length, 200 feet between perpendiculars; extreme breadth, 36½ feet; depth of hold, 20½ feet. Her tonnage is 1250 om, or 980 nm.

Messers Jardine, Mathison, and Co., China merchants, are the owners; and the vessel is built expressly for the China trade. She will be commanded by Captain John Robertson, whose services, first in the John O'Gaunt, and more recently in the Stornoway, are well known. In the latter vessel he has, for the last two years, successfully run the race of competition in carrying the first of the new teas from China to this country.

The Cairngorm is, we believe, the largest sailing vessel ever before built in Scotland; and is certainly about the finest. Her sailing qualities, we are confident, will prove of the very first order, and in carrying power there is every reason to believe she will be equally capable. The Cairngorm lies at Waterloo Quay, and is well worth seeing, as an admirable model of a vessel combining immense size with great elegance of appearance."

Ship's history provided by Lars Bruzelius, Uppsala, Sweden

THE BUILDER:

Alexander Hall & Sons built some of the fastest clippers of the 1850'S mostly for British owners. They included Reindeer (1848), Stornoway (1850), Chrysolite (1851),  Cairngorm (1853), Vision (1854) and Robin Hood (1856). All these ships full-rigged carrying four or five yards on each mast, deployed studdingsails on each side and had the distinctive Aberdeen clipper bow which were less ornate than the traditional practice. The design of the Cairngorm embodied the builder's ideas of what a clipper should be and was built without a firm order from an owner. A big risk for the shipbuilder but Alexander Hall & Sons were proved right as the Cairngorm was purchased by Jardine, Matheson & Co for the tea trade and she proved to be one of the fastest clippers during the 1850's. She cost £15,434 to build and was registered at 939 tons and was acknowledged as ' Cock of the Walk' as she made many fast passages. In 1858-9 she made her fastest homeward passage from Macau to Deal in 91 days.
