ANTIQUE COLLIER BUILDER'S HALF HULL SHIP MODEL Ca 1890
Presented is a beautiful builder's model made to commemorate
the build of a single engined carrier called a collier which was primarily used to haul coal and other bulk cargo
such as ore. Colliers are cargo ships specifically designed to carry
coal, and bulk cargo such as ore. They are built wide and strong, with a flat bottom, and a shallow draft. The shallow draft
allows the ship to pull very close to shore and alongside docks for loading and discharge. Colliers provide a very large amount
of cargo space for their size.
Large original models such as
this are much admired, highly sought after, and in very limited supply.
The half hull is constructed of six lifts of Pine
not counting its deckhouse and hold. It has an unusual contrasting strip of Mahogany that marks its waterline. The hull
and deck are varnished which has taken on a rich golden patina of age.
DIMENSIONS:
The ship model is 42
3/4" L x 3" H x 4 1/2" W The backboard is 47 1/2" L x 10 1/4" H x 6" W Weight 12 1/2 pounds.
CONDITION: This half hull is in remarkable original
condition considering its age. Yes, it has a couple of blemishes on the hull at the turn of the bilge in three places which
look like lashing marks. These are not noticeable from a foot away. There are also some minor dents and scuff marks which
also don't show from any distance. The backboard is in excellent
condition. It has a few minor scratches on its molding.

a great gift for a person who has everything! What a great attention getter.

IN A NUT SHELL: Block and half block models
became more common after 1720 and builders made these to illustrate the designs provided to them by engineering firms. By
the middle of the 1850s half block models were common in commercial shipyards. They were used as aids for framing, planking
and plating ships. By the 1880s more were being made for display only.
