RARE SAILOR MADE CANE WITH CARVED WHALE BONE HANDLE

Mid 19th Century hand crafted whalebone sailor's cane.

Presented is an exceptionally fine sailor made scrimshaw knobby wood 19th Century cane with an "ivory" whale bone handle. Carved on its front is a 1 7/8" x 1" ANCHOR, with a rope ring scrimmed on both sides of the union where the grip portion of the handle joins with the vertical. There also is a band or ring of 7/16" carving where the vertical "bone" joins with the wood. On the back of the handle is a circular piece which may not be original to the handle. There are two very small chips at the front of the joint between vertical and horizontal which help authenticate its age. The wood staff has a elegant old world natural polish which varies from golden to various shades of brown. The tip is capped with a ferrule with patinna, and worn wood shows at the very tip. This cane was in a private collection for the last 25 years.

 

DIMENSIONS: Overall, the cane is 37 1/8" L and 3/4" wide tapering to 3/8" at its end. The grip of the handle is 2 1/2".
