Thank you!   ANTIQUE HYDRAULIC SHIPS STEERING STATION   Presented is a late 19 th Century large size bronze hydraulic single cylinder steering station complete with a fine quality 32" wood spoked bronze wheel. The unit comes mounted on a piece of ship's grating. Hydraulic steering stations were invented by British Admiral, Sir Edward Augustus Inglefield, RN, KBE, (1820-1894) who also was the inventor of the anchor bearing his name and an early torpedo mount.   The pedestal stands 44" high, not counting its base, with the hydraulic cylinder centered and an oil reservoir to port. Turning the steering wheel turns a large gear in the back which is coupled to a smaller gear. This raises and lowers the piston in the cylinder sending the pressurized fluid through a hose which would be attached to hydraulic lines that would move the rudder quadrant. A truly impressive relic of our maritime heritage.   MARKINGS: There is a trade mark on the cylinder head plate that looks like a c with a V to its right. The V has an elongated right tail and is followed by E.H. 88,2.BAR .9.9.68. There are casting numbers, but no maker's tag.
