Presented is an authentic medallion that is the
highest honor bestowed on the world's cruising sailors for their accomplishments in ocean passage-making. It is a never issued,
BLUE WATER MEDAL OF THE CRUISING CLUB OF AMERICA. This medal has been awarded
annually since 1923 to small boat crews who, through outstanding seamanship, have exemplified the goals of the club. The
recipient is selected from all amateur yachtsmen of the world, whether or not they are members, and in fact, most recipients
have not been members. We have listed below a few of the recipients, and there names should be recognizable to any who have
a interest or background in open water long distance sailing.
The medal is a five-inch diameter bronze circular medallion showing a
hemispherical map of the Atlantic Ocean and the geography of the boarders of North America, Greenland and Europe around the
outer perimeter. There are three old world sailing ships and other appropriate insignia emblazoned. On the outer boarder
is inscribed THE BLUE WATER MEDAL OF THE CRUISING CLUB OF AMERICA. In the 6 o'clock position is an area in which the recipients
name may be engraved. The medallion was designed by member Arthur Sturgis Hildebrand, who was lost in the Arctic
with all the crew of the yacht Leiv Eiriksson in September, 1924. The medallion is mounted on a 7 1/2" square
varnished Mahogany backboard with hinged leg that allows it to be displayed on a table.
DIMENSIONS and CONDITION: Plaque 7 1/2" x 7 1/2".
The bronze medal is 5" in diameter. Weight 2 lbs 6 oz. Barely visible from the refinished front is a split
that runs from top to bottom on the wood's right side. On the reverse is the name tag of the well known New York awards maker,
Metallic Art Co, and a hinged wooden leg. One mounting screw is missing.
