ANTIQUE BUILDER'S HALF HULL SHIP MODEL Ca 1900

Presented is a beautiful antique builder's model made to loft the lines of a large size sailing vessel as the first step in the building process. Half Hulls were carefully hand carved, and incorporated the latest in the designer's knowledge of which shape produced the fastest and most seaworthy vessel. A comparison of various half hulls can trace the evolution of sailing craft design, and this one shows the sharply hollowed bow, flat floor, rounded bilges and sharply tapered stern which is typical of the more advanced versions of ship design of the 1880's. Consequently, half hulls  are much admired, highly sought after, and the real ones in very limited supply.

This half hull is constructed of nine lifts of wood, with a sheet of thin cardboard between each layer. The lifts were made to be taken apart, and in this case, it was the cardboard shape that was used as a template to lay off the lines on the floor. These were then enlarged to the vessel's full size in a process that was called "lofting".

PROVENANCE: This hull is the work of a Nova Scotian master shipwright who died in 1953. His ancestors moved to Lunenburg, Novia Scotia in 1716 from Germany. He was born in Voglers Cove, Lunenbury County in 1880. In 1902 he went to sea as a fireman on the S.S. Dallas of U.S. Registry. After a brief stint at sea, he started work as an apprentice in a shipyard in Lunenburg, Novia Scotia, a seaport city still noted for its shipbuilding industry and sailing vessels. It currently is the homeport of the Schooner Bluenose II and the Barque Picton Castle. The maker progressed through the ranks as a journeyman, and finally master shipwright in Luneberg and in yards in Massachusetts where most of the U.S. large sailing vessels were built. In 1932, he moved to Liverpool, another seaport town not too far to the West of Luneberg. He remained there until his death in 1953. The model remained in his family in an unfinished state until offered for sale by his grand daughter. After serious deliberation, we decided to finish the half hull in our shop in order to show it to the best advantage. Unfortunately, there is no record of which ship this is, but it is clearly that of a large sailing vessel and can be either Canadian or American. We estimate the model was made around 1900 when there was still a few large sailing vessels being built.

DIMENSIONS:

The ship model is 36 3/16" L x 4" W x 4 1/4" H
The backboard is  44 1/2 L x 10" W x 3/4" D
Weight 14 pounds.

CONDITION: The half hull is in near original restored condition, but the hand work of knife and chisel that was used to shape it has been sand fair. From the water line up, it has been varnished and from the water line down, it was finished in white Oak. There is some separation between the three lower lifts due to a slight warping. If wanted, this could be corrected with some more small tapered dowels. There are three original dowels securing the bottom lift. There is one tiny crack at deck level right at the transom which is not noticeable. The Mahogany backboard is a recent addition. There are a few dings and scratches on the hull, all very minor and not too noticeable.
