Because of Federal and increasingly restrictive State regulations concerning the sale of whalingcraft, ie. parts made from protected species, we are no longer marketing scrimshaw.

This Antique Cane Has Been Sold. Thank You!

RARE MARITIME CANE WITH CARVED IVORY TURKS HEAD

& DIAMOND SHELL INSERT

Presented is an exceptional maritime 19th Century cane made of scrimshaw "ivory" in the form of a Turks head with diamond shaped shell inlay mounted on a snake wood shaft.

The carved Turks head is 2 3/4" tall and 1 3/4" at its widest point. It shows numerous age cracks and its strands are worn from years of  use. Below the carving is a sterling silver band and at at the tip a high class ferrule which shows little wear. The silver band adds 3/4" to the height of the carved handle. We beleive the carving dates from the first quarter of the 19th Century and that the shaft is a later replacement.

The snake wood staff has nice graining and a good patina. As is typical of snake wood, there is some minor imperfections and checks which are a natural result of drying and add to its good looks. The tip is capped with a ferrule with patina, but little evidence of use.
The carving is the finest of this type we have seen and we guaranteed that it is as represented, and your satisfaction. It is an excellent addtion to a nautical collection of the finest examples maritime art.

DIMENSIONS: Overall, the cane is 37 1/8" L and 2 3/4" wide tapering to 3/8" at its end.

A magnificent example of 19th Century carving showing good natural coloring with variations to the "ivory",  and a wonderful warmth to the wood. We guarantee its authenticity.

Good porosity, grain and hand done scrim

AN OFFERING OF HISTORIC IMPORTANCE

Presented is an interesting collection of miniature whalecraft tools that were made by George Blanchard for his nephew back in the mid 1850's on board the English whaleship Diana. The white sections of the hand crafted tools are whalebone and the black sections are wood. The green felt mounting and 20" L x 12" H wood framing were added by the family years later.

Included in the 13 piece collection are: 2 flags, 2 oars, 1 harpoon, 3 cutting spades, 1 gaff, 1 skimmer, 1 hatchet, 1 harpoon gun and a block and tackle.

The hand written paper label in block print reads:

"EBONY AND BONE MINIATURE WHALING TOOLS FASHIONED BY GEORGE BLANCHARD ON BOARD THE HULL WHALER DIANA AS TOYS FOR HIS NEPHEW".

A COLLECTION OF FINE SCRIMSHAW FOR THE DISCRIMINATING COLLECTOR

THE BALEEN is an old section that has a magnificent whaling scene etched on its face. The hand that did this was a  scrimchander of the first order. The scene shows two whaleboats steering for a sounding whale while a stately full rigged whale ship flying the American flag stands to their starboard. A lighthouse and keeper's building is on a neck of land further to the right while the boarders are framed by climbing vines. The photographs can't capture the fine workmanship that is seen in scrimshaw works of only the most talented artists.

CONDITION: This baleen has a cracked section across the top which is just high enough to clear the top of the drawing and does not interfere with the work. The climbing vines end at the crack showing it was there when the work was done. Both ends are also splintered, again well away from the scrimshawed area.

 DIMENSIONS: Scrimed area  6 1/4" L x 1 1/2" W; Overall 18" L x 2 1/8" D x 1/8" D

 PRICE: 695.00

THE BUSK has a Sperm whale centered with the sailor's favorite five pointed star at each end. Both are boardered by a diamond patterned rope design. The pictures may not do it justice. It is truley a little gem with extraordinarly fine scrim work.  The polychrome is red and two shades of brown. The lower edge is beveled which leads me to believe this was intended as a straight edge, maybe even for chart work.

DIMENSIONS:  7 1/16" L x 1 9/16 W x 1/8" T

PRICE $550.00         SOLD

THE COCONUT AND WHALEBONE WATER DIPPER is the finest old whalebone and coconut dipper that we've ever seen. The coconut shell has been opened and cleaned and its exterior carved with scrimshawed cross hatching at the bottom, vertical grooves along the side and three grooves along the top edge. The handle, made of wood has beautifully turned whalebone on each end, and attaches to the cup of the nut with a whalebone washer. The styling and workmanship likely dates back to Ca 1835-40. The piece is in perfect condition and is of a quality where it belongs in a collection of only the finest scrimshaw or in a museum.

DIMENSIONS: Bowl  4" W x 3" D; Handle  9" L x 11/16" W; Overall  13" L x 3" D

 PRICE: $895.00        SOLD

Presented is a large, rare, antique carpenter's marking gauge, having a wedge shaped  device to lock the cross bar or bridge in place. The wedge is carved by hand in whalebone. It and the bone caps on the end of the rail are embellished with a simple design around their perimeter. There is an elaborate embossed button made of whalebone which is inlaid in the head of the cross bar of the tool. On the underside is stamped "J.H. Jones" in period lettering.  This might be either the mark of the maker or the user. The likelihood is that this gauge was used on board a whaleship and that the scrimshawed bone was added by the carpenter. It has the look and feel of Ca 1850..

DIMENSIONS:

Gauge rail                     21 3/4" L x 13/16" W x 7/8" H
Sliding bridge                  7 1/8" L x 1" W x 2 3/4" H

PRICE $575.00        SOLD
WHALECRAFT TOOLS: A set of miniature whaling tools consisting of an iron (harpoon), lance, and spade sailor made of whalebone ivory dating from the early to mid 1800's. Even though not expensive, the subject matter makes them a worthwhile addition to a scrimshaw collection.

The three items consist of Toggle iron  ~ there is a dowel through the toggle which allows it to pivot, Lance, and Spade

Items such as these were made by seaman on board their ship for their own curiosity and are rarely seen for sale as a set so you may consider this a worthwhile "find".

SIZE: Length of longest tool, the lance, 8 1/2"; Maximum width, shanks, 3/8".

PRICE  $250.00               SOLD

FINE SET OF  SAILOR MADE SCRIMSHAW EATING IMPLEMENTS A classic whalebone ivory set of sailor made knife, for, spoon and tooth pick dating from the early to mid 1800's. A worthwhile addition to a scrimshaw collection. The fork and the spoon are intricately carved with floral and an animal design. Items such as these were made by seaman for their own use and are rarely seen for sale as a set so you may consider this a worthwhile "find".

DIMENSIONS Length of longest tool, the knife,  6 1/2"; Maximum width, blade of knife, 3/4".

PRICE $75.00
